St. Barts Island
Here I am on my Vespa on the Caribbean Isalnd of St. Barts. Everyone around here has to duck his head because this little airport requires the planes to dive into a very short runway. It missed me tho. Story:

Punta Allen
I finally made it! It's at the end of a 30 mile long dirt road that
runs down a narrow penninsula. It is just a small fishing village.

Weary from walking
And ranging wider than my one-speed rental bike, tomorrow I ride! Will
try to reach Boca Paile which is about 10 miles past the end of the
asphalt. Travel book warns the road has bad washouts in the rainy
season--which it is still in the tail end of. Tulum is really the end
of the tourist trail and for good reason--there is not much for
tourists to see for the next 100 miles--no espresso,
No Italian restaurants, no Internet cafes, banks, no youth hostel--
nothing. Just empty coastline, world class sport fishing, an
occasional fishing village--in other words, perfect! Only thing is you
do need a car. Next time!

Finally found a wi-fi spot
The iPhone constantly updates presence and strength of nearby
signals. Most are locked by password but by walking around u can find
an open network if u are persistent.

Things could be worse
Tomorrow than they are today. And even they could get better. Not
wanting to gamble, I'll take today.

30 feet away
This tree is mebbe 30 feet from the expensive nouveau hippie style high-pie beach, where they shell out huge bucks for the same view. Hehehehe.
Hammacas en la playa: $10 (byo)
Found amongst the hippy dippy $100/nite 'eco chic' boutique camping
spots with $7 margueritas were these two campesinos each with a hammock
da, no sign no bath nothing but this ocean front lot they inherited
and can´t afford to build on. $10 nite to camp here and NO PEOPLE! No
snoot nosed psychiatrists from Miami!. Just had to smile, make
friends, and a few words in Spanish. Sweet! Have to buy hammock! (edit) I later found a couple of other $10 spots and a couple of places where surely you could get away with rolling out a sleeping bag for free. Having your own car would solve all of these problems. And for $40 single or $55 for up to four people you can rent a cement floor cabana with a bed and communal showers. That place is the last one at the north end of Tulum beach, just before the ruins. I is called something like Zin Zin but looked like a real fun crowd. Stay away from Diamante K which appears to be run by a mean old witch who will get you when you aren·t looking. By the way, as I type this in the internet cafe, I realize you can not type without looking, as the keyboard is different. Wanna know how to do an @? That would be >Alt>64 in case you are interested.

The Guilt
Is almost overwhelming. Shouln't I be doing something productive? It
has bee. Hard to find a wi-fi signal good enough for the iPhone. The
water is the same temp as the air,so you can stay in a long time. All
the good pix are still on the other camera. This is Playa del Carmen
and nice but touristy so tomorrow I escape South to Tulum and the
ruins, more swimming and fish tacos. I'm so bad.

Landing in Seattle
Wow! What a gorgeous approach. On the final downwind going South with
my seat facing West, and the bright early sun, I saw lots of beautiful
huge historic buildings that I wondered what they were. I only wish I
had videotaped that. Stinky of course somehow knew I was leaving him
and slept on the bed which he never does. How do they know? Since we
were 35 min. Late, I really had to run for N gate, which entails
taking the tram and several escalators. Happy crowd on the Cancu.
Flight, and an empty middle seat. I have a window. Lots of well to
do Mexicans. I smell coffee. Its 9:15 am. And we're at cruising
altitude. I love travelling!!

Problem with the cart
Somebody forgot to charge the cart, that little electric vehicle that
pushes the plane backwards from the jetway, so we are stuck waiting
and the pilot is pissed. Is this airport 2nd rate? Ask Peter.

Peter DeFazio
This is the back of Peter's head. When I asked him where he was
headed, he said 'same place as usual'. I don't think he likes
Washington DC.

Tulum, Mexico
In and around Tulum (Yucatan Penninsula) if you look on Google Earth,
you'll find some beautiful and empty beaches. This is where I am
headed for soon. If you want to come with me, the flight is only $443
round trip from Eugene and I have booked Jan 15-30 with Alaska.
